Most people know the 3/4 guitar as a child size. That is true, but only half the story. With a scale length of around 580 to 615 millimetres, it sits far more compactly in the hand than a full 4/4 guitar, and that is exactly what makes it interesting for adults too.
We show who the smaller size really pays off for, where it differs from the 1/2 and 4/4 sizes, and what matters in terms of material and quality.
01What the 3/4 size actually means
The fraction describes the build size of a classical guitar, not the pitch. A 3/4 guitar has a so-called short scale of about 580 to 615 millimetres. The scale length is the vibrating string length between nut and bridge, and it determines how far the fingers have to reach across the fretboard.
A shorter scale means tighter fret spacing and lower string tension. The strings press down more easily and chords take less force. The 3/4 classical guitar is tuned to standard E, so it does not sound higher, just a little more compact and direct.
02For children of about six to nine years
The classic use: primary-school children, roughly between six and nine years old. The hand is still too small for a full 4/4 scale, while a 1/2 guitar would often already be too tiny. The 3/4 size hits the right spot for many beginners.
Because body sizes vary a lot, age is only a guide. What matters is whether the child can rest the arm comfortably over the body and reach the first frets without contorting. Which fraction matches which body height is broken down in detail in our overview of children's sizes.
03For adults with small hands
This is the often-overlooked part. A 3/4 guitar is not a children-only instrument. Adults with slender hands, short fingers or a smaller build often play more comfortably on the tighter scale than on a 4/4 guitar.
The lower string tension also spares the fretting hand. Anyone who cramps up quickly during long sessions on the full size, or who struggles with barre chords, often finds an easier way in on the short scale. A nicely finished 3/4 guitar with a solid top such as the AROUND MUSIC Contigo C-103 Konzertgitarre Fichte massiv 3/4 shows that compact does not mean compromise.

04As a travel, sofa and couch guitar
The compact build makes the 3/4 guitar an ideal second guitar for travel and quick sessions. It fits more easily into the car, the holiday home or next to the sofa, and is quickly to hand when you only want to play a few chords.
Many experienced players deliberately keep a small guitar as a couch guitar, precisely because the barrier to picking it up is low. An affordable, robust way into this role is the Prodipe Primera 3/4 Kurzmensur Konzertgitarre Fichte, designed as an uncomplicated companion.
051/2, 3/4 or 4/4 and which strings
Roughly: 1/2 for small children from about six or very slight adults, 3/4 for primary-school children and adults with small hands, 4/4 as the full size from about ten to twelve years and for average-sized adults. If you are weighing up the full size, you will find the details in our article on the 4/4 classical guitar.
Nearly all 3/4 guitars in this class are classical guitars with nylon strings. Nylon is soft to fret and therefore friendly for learners and children. Steel strings in 3/4 appear mainly on small acoustic folk guitars, sit tighter and are aimed at more advanced hands.
| Size | Scale (approx.) | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2 | 530 to 560 mm | small children, very slight adults |
| 3/4 | 580 to 615 mm | primary-school children, small hands, travel |
| 4/4 | from 650 mm | from approx. 10-12 years, average adults |
06Quality matters even at a small size
A small guitar should not be a cheap toy. When learning, tuning stability and clean playability decide whether the joy lasts. Wobbly tuners, an action that sits too high or a dull tone frustrate a beginner faster than any tricky chord shape.
Look for a solid top, clean fret edges and stable tuners. On this point, size makes no difference: a well-built 3/4 guitar sounds full and stays in tune. The whole range in this size can be found in the Konzertgitarren 3/4 category.
The 3/4 guitar is more than a child size. It suits beginners, adults with small hands and serves as a handy companion for travel. In each of these roles, solid build quality remains essential, because only a guitar that holds its tuning and plays cleanly brings lasting joy.
