Every trumpet player knows the problem: the instrument is loud, the neighbours are close and practice time often falls exactly when everyone else wants quiet. A Silent Brass for trumpet solves precisely that. The Yamaha SB7J is the current J-generation system and combines a light mute with a small sound module, so you can practice late at night, in an apartment or in a hotel.
This article focuses on the trumpet and cornet. We explain how the SB7J is built, how quiet it really gets, what is included and who it is worth buying for.
01What sets the SB7J apart for trumpet
The SB7J has two parts. The first is the pickup mute, a mute that slots into the trumpet bell and houses a small microphone. This generation is much smaller and lighter than the early Silent Brass mutes and blows freely, so the air resistance does not change the playing feel much.
The second part is the Personal Studio, a module with Yamaha Brass Resonance Modeling. This technology removes the closed, muffled tone you know from simple practice mutes and returns an open, natural trumpet sound through your headphones. So you do not hear the mute, but something very close to the open instrument.

02How quiet does it really get
With the pickup mute in place, the volume that escapes into the room drops sharply. What remains is well below the level of an openly played trumpet and is closer to a hushed conversation than a brass instrument.
In practice that means practicing late in the evening in an apartment without filling the neighbours rooms through the wall. A session in a hotel room while travelling. Or playing while someone sleeps next door. It is not complete silence, since the valves and breath noise stay audible, but the loud tone itself lands in your headphones rather than across the whole building.
03Play-along and what is included
The Personal Studio has an aux input. You can connect a smartphone or player and play along to backing tracks, etude apps or accompaniments, all mixed into your headphones. Over the USB connection to a computer or tablet you can also record or join online lessons without an extra audio interface.
The system ships complete: the pickup mute for trumpet and cornet, the Personal Studio module and the cables you need. Headphones are chosen separately to taste. If you are also looking for a matching instrument, we stock the Yamaha Trompete YTR 3335 as a solid student and all-round trumpet, for example.

04Who the SB7J is worth it for
Three groups benefit most. Students who should practice daily but need to respect family or neighbours. Working players who only get to the horn late in the evening. And travellers who want to keep up their routine on the road without disturbing a hotel.
Worth knowing: Silent Brass systems are instrument specific and not interchangeable. The SB7J is made for trumpet and cornet. Trombonists need the matching SB5J, horn players the SB3J. If you want to understand in general how Silent Brass compares to a classic practice mute, see our Silent Brass overview and our Silent Brass versus practice mute comparison. In the Trompeten - Dämpfer you will also find the alternatives, from a simple straight mute to a pure practice mute.
The SB7J is one of the most practical ways to keep practicing the trumpet regardless of the time of day or your living situation. The sound in your headphones stays naturally motivating, and the neighbours are kept out of it.
