Yamaha VSH3: how the Silent installation works on a piano

Anyone who owns a piano and wants to practise quietly through headphones eventually comes across the Yamaha VSH3. It is Yamaha's current Silent system, used to bring a piano, new or an existing Yamaha SILENT Piano, up to the latest standard in sensor technology and sound generation.

This article looks specifically at what gets installed with the VSH3, what stays untouched on the piano, and what the playing feel is like day to day. For a general look at whether a Silent retrofit is possible on your own piano at all, see our article on retrofitting a Silent system.

01What exactly is the VSH3

The VSH3 is Yamaha's current sensor and electronics unit from the SILENT Piano range. It reads the movement of the keys and pedals without contact and translates it into digital sound, played back through headphones or speakers. At its core the system consists of a stop rail that catches the hammers just short of the strings, a sensor strip fitted beneath the keybed, and a tone generator with a headphone jack and connections for external devices.

The VSH3 is used both in new instruments that Yamaha can already fit with a SILENT system at the factory, such as the Yamaha B30 Klavier schwarz poliert mit SC3 Silent System or the Yamaha YUS 1 Klavier schwarz poliert mit SH3 Silent System, and in existing Yamaha pianos that already carry an older Silent system whose electronics are brought up to date.

02What stays original on the piano

The key point for many piano owners: the acoustic action itself is not changed by the Silent system. Hammers, strings, soundboard and keyboard remain exactly the same components they were before. In normal playing, with the stop rail disengaged, the piano sounds and responds exactly as it would without a Silent system.

What is added is a mechanical stop rail, engaged by a pedal or switch, which catches the hammers just before they reach the strings, along with the sensor strip mounted discreetly beneath the keybed. Both are reversible in terms of sound generation: fold the stop rail back and the piano plays fully acoustically again.

03The sensors: how key movement is captured

For the digital sound to reflect the touch dynamics of a real piano, the movement of each key has to be measured very precisely. The VSH3 uses contactless optical sensors that measure at several points along the movement of key and hammer, not just whether a key was pressed, but how fast and with what nuance.

This multi-point sensing is why a good Silent system does not feel "digital" when playing quietly through headphones, but tracks the touch curve of your own playing. Pedal movement is captured as well, so the sustain pedal and una corda pedal respond in digital mode just as they do acoustically.

04What it feels like to play with the VSH3

Key resistance and the weight of the action do not change with the Silent system; playing in digital mode still means feeling the real piano action under your fingers, just without the string sound. The sound itself comes from a digital sound engine built around several concert grand samples, and is heard through headphones or the built-in speakers.

Added to that are practical features such as a recording function, several instrument sounds besides the grand piano, and, depending on the specification, a connection to a companion app on a tablet. In everyday terms that means practising normally on the acoustic piano during the day, then continuing through headphones in the evening without disturbing neighbours or family.

05Installation and advice

Installing a Silent system such as the VSH3 is specialist work, carried out by trained piano technicians who fit the stop rail and sensors precisely to the instrument in question. Whether and in what form a retrofit makes sense for your own piano depends on the model, age and condition of the instrument, which we discuss on an individual basis.

Anyone interested in a piano with a factory-fitted Silent system will find an overview of current models in our Klaviere - Neu category.

The Yamaha VSH3 turns a piano into an instrument that can be played either acoustically or through headphones, without changing the action itself. Anyone interested is best served by an individual assessment of whether their own instrument is suitable.

Frequently asked questions

Does the VSH3 change the acoustic sound of my piano
No. In normal playing with the stop rail disengaged, the acoustic action stays unchanged and the piano sounds and responds as before. The Silent system only comes into play once the stop rail is engaged.
Can the VSH3 be installed in any piano
That depends on the specific model, age and condition of the instrument. Whether a retrofit is technically possible and worthwhile is assessed individually by trained specialists.
How does the system capture touch dynamics
Contactless optical sensors measure the movement of keys, hammers and pedals at several points along their travel. This lets the digital sound reflect the nuance of each touch, rather than simply detecting pressed or released.
Does playing feel different with a Silent system
Key resistance and the weight of the action stay identical to the acoustic version, because the action itself is not changed. Only the sound output changes, running through headphones or speakers in digital mode.
